Botany :

Description : Terrestrial, annual or perennial, erect herb, up to 150 cm tall. Taproot white ore brown. Stem rounded or angular, solid, glabrous, hairy. Stipules present, triangular, glabrous. Leaves simple, alternate spiral, stalked, more than 2 cm long/wide, hairy on both sides, margin entire, apex attenuate or acute, base acute or attenuate, pinnately veined. Flowers bisexual, solitary, axillary, petals 4, yellow. Fruit a capsule, indehiscent or splitting in irregular pieces.

Biology :

Reproduction by seeds.

Phenology :

Usually flowering September to January.

Ecology :

In everwet regions and in those with a pronounced dry season; on damp fields and grasslands, along water-courses; locally often throughout the year. Lowlland-irrigated, rainfed and rice fields.

Distribution :

Pantropical originating from tropical America.

Agricultural importance :

Can become a nuisance.

Chemical control :

2 applications of 0.45 kg of 2.4-D in 91 l of water at 4-week intervals. Spot spry later (Malaysia). Used in rice: butachlo, 2.4-D, fluorodifen, oxadiazon, propanil, trifluralin.
