Botany :

Description : Terrestrial, tufted, erect herb, not rooting at nodes. Roots fibrous, white or brown. Stems flat, hairy. Nodes hairy. Stipules absent. Leaves alternate spiral, sessile, linear, more than 2 cm long/wide, apex acute, base clasping, parallel-veined. Leaf sheath present. Leaf sheath present. Ligule membranous. Flowers bisexual, grouped together in a terminal spike, sessile, pink, red or purple, petals not visible. Fruit a nut.

Biology :

Reproduction by seeds and vegetatively.

Phenology :

Flowering July to November; fruiting August to December.

Ecology :

Common in open areas, fallow fields, roadsides, ditches and pond margins.
