Botany :

Description : Terrestrial, annual, prostrate herb, rooting at nodes. Roots fibrous, white or brown. Stems flat, hairy nodes. Stipules absent. Leaves alternate spiral, sessile, lanceolate or elliptic, base clasping, parallel-veined. Leaf sheath present, compressed. Ligule membrano-ciliate. Flowers bisexual, grouped together in a terminal panicle, sessile, green or brown, petals not visible. Fruit a nut.

Biology :

Reproduction by seeds and vegetatively.

Phenology :

Usually flowering July to December.

Ecology :

A. compressus forms dense plant communities in the alluvial lowlands.

Distribution :

Originating in tropical America is now pan- tropical and subtropical.
