Botany :

Description : Terrestrial, tufted, erect herb, rooting at nodes. Roots fibrous, white or brown. Stems rounded, glabrous. Stipules absent. Leaves alternate spiral, sessile, linear, more than 2 cm long/wide, apex acute, base clasping, parallel-veined. Leaf sheath present. Flowers bisexual, grouped together in a terminal spike or panicle, sessile, yellow, petals not visible. Fruit a nut.

Biology :

Reproduction by seeds and vegetatively.

Phenology :

Usually fruiting August to March.

Ecology :

Present in rotation crops and aquatic biotopes like rice fields.

Distribution :

Indian continent, S.E.Asia, Sumatra, Java Kalimantan. Tropical Africa and America riginating in Asia.
