Reproductive shoot system bearing flowers. The inflorescence is composed of a system of branches the principal axis being termed the pedoncule, or rachis particularly in grasses. In many plants each branch or ultimately flower arises in the axil of a leaf (bract) which is frequently dissimilar to foliage leaves on the same plant. But some or all of these bracts may be absent.
