Diagnostic characters :

Eragrostis japonica is an annual tufted grass growing up to 1m high. The culms are glabrous with light green coloration and sometimes reddish at their bases. The nodes are swollen. The inflorescences, whitish when young becoming purplish when mature, are narrow and at the apex of long slender axes.

Biology :

Post-emergence application of 2_4-D at 500 g.I/ha or pre-emergence application of butachlor at 1.5 kg a.I/ha, Anilophos at 400 g/ha, Pretilachlor at 1.0 kg/ha.

Botany :

Habit
Erect annual grass, mostly glabrous, growing up to 1.25 m tall.
Roots
Very dense fasciculate roots.
Stem
Culms tufted glabrous, light green.
Leaves
Alternate with linear blades 12 to 18cm and 3 to 4mm wide, tip acuminate; venation pinnate, raised on both sides, lacking a distinct midnerve; finely scabrous on both sides, green above, duller green underneath. Ligule membranous, marginally erose, easily recognisable by its white coloration.
Inflorescence
A narrow, terminal panicle, 30 to 40cm long and 2 to 3cm wide. Axes slender, finely scabrous, light green; pedicels 0.5 to 2mm long. Spikelets flats, glabrous, 1.5 to 1.75 long and 1mm wide. Lower glume thin, oblong and with an obtuse tip. Upper glume ovate with obtuse tip. Lemmas 5 to 9 disposed in two rows, oblong and with obtuse tip, 3-nerved, whitish-light greenish and turning dull violet. Paleas thinner, 2-keeled, embraced by the lemma. Lemmas and paleas falling off from the top of the spikelet to the base.
Fruit
Grains elliptic with both ends acute, smooth, glossy brown, c. 0.5mm long.
